41 Original Hits from the Soundtrack of American Graffiti is the official 1973 soundtrack album of the film American Graffiti. It has been certified triple platinum in the . where it peaked at on the Billboard 200 album chart. Included in the film, but not on the soundtrack, are "Gee" by The Crows, "Louie Louie" by Flash Cadillac & the Continental Kids, and Harrison Ford's in-character a cappella rendition of "Some Enchanted Evening".

The other original members were: Clarence Collins (group founder), Ernest Wright, Glouster "Nate" Rogers and Tracey Lord, the last two of whom were replaced by Samuel "Sammy" Strain. Changing their name to the Imperials, they signed with End Records in 1958. Their first single was "Tears on My Pillow", which was an instant hit. It sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold disc by the RIAA. While playing this song, . Alan Freed came up with the name "Little Anthony". Original Imperials member Nate Rogers was drafted into the service and Tracey Lord, another original member, left to get married. and the line-up then became Collins, Wright, Sammy Strain, (a childhood friend who had grown up together with the Imperials in Brooklyn), and George Kerr. Kerr was replaced by Kenny Seymour after a short time.

Epitomised by their dramatic, heartfelt pop/soul records, the Imperials enjoyed their peak success in the ‘60s notably with the singles I’m on the Outside (Looking In) (1964), Goin’ Out Of My Head (1964), Hurt So Bad (1965), I Miss You So (1965), Take Me Back (1965), and Hurt (1966). The latter five singles were taken from the Imperial’s fourth studio album, Goin’.

Little Anthony & The Imperials were signed to DCP Records, where Teddy Randazzo and Bobby Weinstein wrote their hit songs "I'm on the Outside (Looking In)" and "Goin' out of My Head," both big time heartache songs. After writing "Come A Little Bit Closer" with Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart signed with DCP Records and sang background when Randazzo performed in Las Vegas. Hart considers "Hurt So Bad" his crowning achievement as a songwriter, although he knows that he'll always be remembered for his hits with The Monkees.
